Mohammed Samaan Agha, President of the Iraqi Turkmen Front and Governor of Kirkuk, stated that the events of July 14–16, 1959, were among the bloodiest chapters in the history of Kirkuk, during which politically motivated criminal attacks clearly targeted the Turkmen community.
He said that the exact number of people killed and wounded in the 1959 Kirkuk Massacre remains unknown to this day.
According to the sources referenced by Samaan Agha, most of the perpetrators were members of the Iraqi Communist Party of Kurdish origin and groups allied with them, while some sources also mention the participation of a number of Arab members in the events.
