KAR Electrical Power Plant Production Trading FZE (KEPPT), a prominent player in Iraq’s private sector, has officially engaged global banking giant J.P. Morgan to manage the development financing for a $1.6 billion urea manufacturing plant in Basra. This strategic initiative stands as one of the largest private sector industrial investments in Iraq’s history.
The facility is designed to reach an annual production capacity of 1.15 million tonnes, a significant step that will drastically reduce Iraq’s dependence on imported fertilizers and strengthen its domestic agricultural output. Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with the plant expected to be fully operational by 2030. The project aims to bolster national food security and stabilize local pricing, positioning Iraq as a more self-reliant agricultural hub.
The involvement of J.P. Morgan highlights the rising international appetite for Iraq’s industrial growth, following the successful completion of front-end engineering and design (FEED) studies by U.S.-based engineering firm KBR. The financial institution’s participation underscores a powerful vote of confidence in the long-term potential of the Iraqi economy.
Beyond its economic impact, the plant will utilize state-of-the-art, eco-friendly technology to minimize environmental footprint. This project is set to become a cornerstone of the regional economy, providing significant employment opportunities and serving as a catalyst for sustainable development across the country.
